Largest Battery Energy Storage Project in Oklahoma and Southwest Power Pool History Will Support Grid Reliability and Growing Energy Demand
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Deriva Energy announced today that the Oklahoma Corporation Commission has approved the Frontier Energy Storage Project, allowing the largest battery storage project in Oklahoma and Southwest Power Pool history to move forward. The 302-megawatt battery storage facility will be constructed in Kay County, Oklahoma, in partnership with Oklahoma Gas & Electric (OG&E). Construction is expected to begin later this year, with the project entering service in 2028.
Frontier Energy Storage was selected through a competitive procurement process as a cost-effective solution to help meet growing electricity demand while strengthening grid reliability for Oklahoma customers. OG&E has seen electricity demand rise 25% over the past five years and now serves nearly 40,000 more customers than in 2021. Once operational, Frontier will provide critical energy storage capacity that can dispatch power when it is needed most, improving system flexibility and efficiency across the region.
Under a Build Transfer Agreement, Deriva Energy will develop and construct the facility before transferring ownership to OG&E for long-term operation. The project reflects years of collaboration between Deriva Energy and OG&E to advance a reliable, cost-effective energy solution for Oklahoma customers. Together, the two companies worked through project development, engineering, permitting, and regulatory review to bring Frontier to this milestone.
